"Legend tells of a legendary track whose races were the stuff of legends" Pardon our plagiarism, but this (altered) quote from Kung Fu Panda perfectly captures the Indy 500. This is a race whose reputation precedes itself and a landmark location so famous it is its own city. When Indianapolis Motor Speedway (located in Speedway, IN which is comprised of the speedway and not much else) opened in 1909 it was first used as a testing ground for the automobile ndustry. Little did they know that one of the 3 most famous races in the world would become a hallmark event at IMS.
Over the past century traditions have become almost as important as the race itself. From its pre-race spectacle to the winner`s ceremonial slurp of milk, the Indy 500 marks the one-day pinnacle of motor sports for millions of fans. Bands march. Balloons soar. Drivers crank their engines precisely on cue. And there are no champagne showers in Victory Lane; just gurgles of cold milk. Traditions may die hard at Indy but the party lives on. As for legendary drivers, A.J. Foyt said nobody would know who he was, despite his hundreds of victories, if he hadn`t won at Indy.
Experience the traditions, rivalries, terrifying speeds and jaw-dropping maneuvers of the Indy 500 at the world famous Brickyard in 2011!
